”Se povestește că odată, demult, trăia retras în munții din China un maestru. Era vesel tot timpul, le zâmbea tuturor celor care îi ieșeau în cale. Unul dintre elevii lui, curios fiind să afle cum de maestrul este tot timpul fericit, l-a întrebat într-o zi: – Maestre, de unde acest zâmbet continuu pe chipul tău? – De la clopoțeii de vânt, răspunse maestrul. – Cum așa? – De fiecare dată când sună clopoțeii de argint de la poarta mea, mă cuprinde o bucurie fără margini! Înseamnă că vine cineva… Și sosirea cuiva, fie și doar a vântului, mă umple de fiecare dată de fericire… Gândind că ar avea în ei ceva magic, într-o noapte elevul hotărî să fure clopoțeii. ”Călugărul zen Bankei Ytaku obișnuia să strângă în jurul său discipoli din diferite părți ale Japoniei, veniți să mediteze împreună. Într-una din aceste ocazii, unul dintre tineri a fost prins furând. Fapta i-a fost raportată îndată lui Bankei, cu recomandarea că hoțul să fie alungat. Bankei nu a reacționat în niciun fel, preferând să ignore întâmplarea. Mai târziu, elevul a fost prins furând pentru a doua oară, dar maestrului nu a părut să-i pese nici de această dată. Nemulțumiți, ceilalți discipoli i-au adresat o petiție, prin care îi cereau să îl alunge pe hoț, pentru că altfel aveau să plece ei.
