Avea doar o singură haină pentru că împărţea tot ce avea celor săraci. Împăratul, văzându-i haina roasă, îi dădu bani să-şi cumpere alta nouă. A doua zi, Yamaoka apăru tot în haina cea veche. „De ce nu ţi-ai luat haine noi?„, îl întrebă împăratul. „I-am îmbrăcat pe fiii Maiestăţii voastre„, răspunse învăţatul.”
