”Trăia odată în nordul Chinei un înţelept care împlinise optzeci de ani. Era cel mai vestit tălmăcitor al învăţăturii lui Confucius, iar faima lui o întrecea cum mult pe aceea a celorlalţi înţelepţi. La o vreme s-a auzit un zvon, care venea din sud, cum că trăia acolo un om şi mai înţelept, cu mintea şi mai ascuţită. Bătrânul înţelept din nord, găsind că era cu neputinţă, a hotărât să pornească la drum pentru a vedea cu ochii lui cum stau lucrurile.
Drumul a fost greu şi plin de piedici. După luni şi luni de mers, a ajuns în sfârşit la noul înţelept, s-a dus la el şi i-a spus cine este, iar cei doi au hotărât să-şi arate tot ceea ce ştiau, pentru a vedea care dintre ei este cel mai bun.
Bătrânul a început să vorbească. I-a trebuit mai multe ceasuri pentru a înfăţişa, cu calm şi inteligenţă, principalele puncte ale gândirii sale. La sfârşit, i-a cerut omului din sud, un buddhist din şcoala numită zen, să-şi împărtăşească şi el ideile.
Înţeleptul zen a spus doar atât:
– Să cauţi să nu faci rău şi pe cât poţi să faci numai bine.
Înţeleptul cel bătrân, auzind aceste vorbe, s-a înroşit de mânie.
– Ce! a strigat el. la vârsta mea, am înfruntat toate primejdiile unui drum atât de lung! Ţi-am spus de ce am venit! Ţi-am arătat în amănunt care este doctrina mea! Nu ţi-am ascuns nimic! Iar tu îmi dai în schimb câteva vorbe neînsemnate pe care le ştie pe dinafară până şi un copil de trei ani! Nu cumva îţi baţi joc de mine?
Învăţătorul zen i-a răspuns:
– Nu, nu-mi bat joc de tine. Dar dacă este adevărat că un copil de trei ani ştie pe dinafară acest lucru, văd că un om de optzeci de ani nu este în stare să trăiască astfel.”
